The decision to obtain and wear hearing aids every day can be a difficult decision to make. The strategies we are taught in school to support the patient with this decision are to educate them and then make recommendations. However, using this approach alone yields a mere 56% adoption rate. Motivational Interviewing is 5 times more effective in facilitating health-related behavior changes than education alone. Bobbi-Jo grew up with a genetic hearing impairment and a profoundly deaf mother. Her journey into the hearing care industry was part of her mission to make a difference in the lives of those with hearing challenges. At Western University, she underwent a transformative experience in a course on motivational interviewing. This material fundamentally altered her perspective on addressing patient ambivalence. Recognizing the immense potential of applying this approach in hearing healthcare, she spent the next few years gathering resources and insights on effectively incorporating motivational interviewing into our practices.
