Course Abstract & Learning Objectives

This course addresses how hearing healthcare professionals in British Columbia can communicate effectively with their regulator, whether they are renewing a licence, making a mandatory report, or responding to a complaint. Since the Health Professions and Occupations Act took effect on April 1, 2026, all disciplinary orders are published, including those reached by consent, and employers are notified when an order is made. That makes an informed, deliberate response more important than ever. The course covers the key changes under the new Act, the complaint and investigation process, possible outcomes, and six practical steps to follow when the regulator makes contact. Participants will learn how to balance their duty to cooperate with protecting their own interests, when to involve their insurer and legal counsel, and how to protect their licence, reputation and practice.

  • Describe the key changes under BC’s Health Professions and Occupations Act, including the new mandatory reporting duties, the broader definition of misconduct, and the publication of all disciplinary orders.

  • Explain how a complaint moves through the College, from investigation to possible outcomes, including informal resolution, consent agreements and a disciplinary hearing.

  • Apply six practical steps when contacted by the regulator, including notifying their insurer, getting legal advice early, and balancing the duty to cooperate with protecting their own interests.
