COURSE ABSTRACT:

This course provides audiologists and hearing healthcare professionals with essential knowledge and strategies for providing effective hearing rehabilitation for people living with dementia. It addresses the increasing need for specialized care due to the aging population and the high comorbidity of hearing loss and dementia. The course emphasizes the importance of recognizing cognitive impairment, utilizing family-centered approaches, and modifying management strategies to optimize success. Key topics include identifying patients with dementia, understanding the impact of hearing loss on this population, the benefits of hearing interventions, and practical guidance on amplification technologies, environmental modifications, and communication strategies.

Marilyn Reed  
Audiologist

Marilyn Reed obtained her Master’s degree in Audiology from the University of Southampton, England in 1976 and has since worked in Canada in a variety of clinical settings, with a focus on hearing rehabilitation in older adults. She has been with Baycrest Health Sciences in Toronto for over 25 years as a clinician and clinical researcher in the area of hearing and cognition. Her recent projects include hearing screening in Memory Clinics and evaluating HEARS, a community-based hearing rehabilitation program for older adults in Toronto and New Brunswick.
